Developing Interest in Learning Activities


To develop students’ interest, this reflection is focus on introductory focus, personalization, involvement, and feedback.
Introductory focus is focus on attracting students’ attention by linking students’ prior knowledge to the new knowledge/lesson and gives a limitation to the students. The first step for the teacher is giving a concrete example such as daily life conversation. Then second step is teacher uses problem based learning by giving a problem and ask the students. Not only give the students a real example, but teacher also has to tells the students about the goal of the lesson and give them an expectation of the learning. To do the step of introductory focus, the method of the teacher has to explain the lesson from general to specific. It will lead the students more focus and interest in learning activities.
Developing interest in learning activities, teacher need to know the background of the students. In personalization, teacher can relate the lesson by relating the topic with students’ personal characteristic or their background. The involvement of the students also will automatically increase. By relating students’ background, it can activate students’ interaction to involve in the learning activity by their own will. The activities that can increase students’ intrinsic interest are by using hands-on activities such as practical activities and using open-ended question such as discussion activity.
 In the learning process give some feedback to the students can increase their motivation in learning. Feedback is comment or opinion toward students’ work. It can be form as a written or spoken. There are two kinds of feedback. First is evaluative feedback such as give a grade for students’ summative result, give a judgment for single measurement, give it in general way not specific feedback, and then evaluative feedback can link to the reward or punishment. Second is instructional feedback such as give some point for students’ improvement, use some example in relation to students’ work, and teacher can provide some strategies to build students motivation for moving forward.
The ideas to start the lesson by providing the students an introductory focus and teacher knows the personalization of each students, it can involve students’ interest in the learning process. Moreover, if the teacher can give a good feedback. The students will more interest and have motivation in the learning process.
